Lillian White was a single parent before women were a major part of the workforce, when television series portrayed a different image of normal family life. Single parents were not recognized as the heroes that they were.
As a 39 year old widow, she did everything she could to provide for her two young sons, she was both mother and father with all the responsibility of the family resting on her shoulders.
Lillian went back to college to become a school secretary so that she could have the same Holidays as her kids. In the summer time she worked at resort hotels in the Catskill Mountains to give her family a chance to escape from the hot city.
She loved to play scrabble, work on crossword puzzles and pursue her passion to write. Lillian wrote poems, articles, a musical play as well as short stories including The Three Purple Children. Some were submitted to the newspaper in her retirement village. She received very kind and nostalgic comments from the readers.
Lillian's real passion was her family. There was always a smile on her face whenever she saw her children, her grandchildren and her great grandson.
Jacklyn Laflamme was born and raised in Montreal Canada, graduating with degrees in Creative Arts and Interior Design, both with honors. She began a professional career leveraging her design sensibilities as a visual display artist. She joined Canada’s leading retail marketing and merchandising company Image Display and attributes her infallible sense of line, balance, structure, form and harmony to her five years with this company.
Laflamme simultaneously apprenticed herself to a Canadian paintmaker. Here, she gained a comprehensive, hands-on education for the elemental materials of her craft; How the grinding of pigments can affect the brilliance of a color, to the mixing of the binders, solvents and additives that create the body of the paint and how different manufacturing techniques affect the intensity of hues. This gave her the foundation to intelligently experiment with different color mediums that manifests itself today in the riotous color that drenches her canvases.
Moving onwards and literally upwards, Laflamme’s career took off as she entered the world of interior design for corporate jets. Over the next 10 years she designed for Bombardier in Montreal, Learjet in Tucson and Gulfstream in Savannah. In this work, she traveled the world designing complete interiors (and supervising the build out process) for heads of state, nobility and the leaders of the business, sports and entertainment worlds. In 2000, she decided to live her dream and work as an artist. She was emboldened in this decision by the success of her first solo show and committed herself to making art full-time.
She is an award-winning professional artist; designer, sculptor, painter & illustrator. She has sold hundreds of paintings world wide through gallery representation and direct commissions. Jacklyn is very passionate and believes that art can change the fabric of landscapes and create beautiful environments. As a grant recipient she has made a difference with her community art projects and is now well recognized in the public art arena with her vibrant murals and sculptures. She is a visionary and an entrepreneur, truly a Jack of All Trades, to experience her work is magical, her Joie de Vivre shines through!
This book is in loving memory of Lillian White, who as a young mother wrote this sweet story for her two young sons, who are now both senior citizens. She was fortunate enough to enjoy seeing the reactions of her grandson and great-grandson, among others, as they heard the story over the years. And we were all very fortunate to have Mom celebrate her 96th birthday surrounded by her family.
We would like to thank Lillian’s daughter-in-law, Iris White, who was determined to turn Lillian’s notes into a printed legacy to be enjoyed by future generations.
Jacklyn Laflamme, an award winning Florida artist, has taken these wonderful characters and scenes and brought them to life in an imaginative way that would have thoroughly delighted Lillian. Rick White
